The 3rd International Conference on the Arts in Society
Birmingham 28th - 31st July 2008
Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, a Faculty of Birmingham City University is proud to host this
year’s annual conference.
The conference will run from 28th - 31st July 2008 and will address a range of critically important
issues relating to the Arts.
This year’s special theme is ART AS COMMUNICATION
Key Note Speakers include, Professor Bruce Brown, Professor Mario Minichiello,
Dr Caroline Archer (Type +), Professor Andrzej Klimowskii & Jeff Willis (Royal College of Art)
Conference presenters will include contributors in all areas of the arts - artists, educators, graduate
students, curators, writers, theorists, researchers, and policymakers. Also presentations in all
disciplines (visual, performing and literary). This is a conference for any person with an interest in,
and a concern for, art practice, art theory and research, curatorial and museum studies, and art
education in any of its forms and in any of its sites.
The Conference aims not only to be reflective, but also to be active - moving works from the studio
to public discourse, moving from the public stage to the policy chambers - as well as providing a form
of refl exive consciousness for thinking about the role of the arts in society. The conference thereby
contributes to creating an opportunity for forging a design agenda for the arts.
